Sir:-
I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknow-
ledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th instant
enclosing a copy of a Despatch from the Governor of
Hong Kong with regard to the connection between the
Canton-Kowloon and Canton-Hankow Railways.
The subject of recognition is one which is being
settled in concert with other Powers, and Sir E. Grey
is therefore unwilling to complicate it by the intro-
duction of isolated questions of this nature affecting
His Majesty's Government alone.
He agrees, however, that it would be desirable to
bring this matter to the notice of the Chinese Govern-
ment and is accordingly instructing His Majesty's
Chargé d'Affaires at Peking in a Despatch of which a
copy is enclosed, to take the first suitable oppor-
tunity of urging this step upon them.
I am, Sir,
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
Your most obedient,
humble Servant,
Eyre A Crowe
